How to calculate the return on jewelry RFID inventory

Build the ROI model from a measured baseline and a validated pilot, not from a generic industry percentage. Include labor, frequency, reconciliation, transfer errors, consumables, hardware, software, integration, training, support, and rollout risk. Keep productivity benefits separate from inventory-value claims unless the customer can verify both.

RFID can change more than the time required to count stock. It can alter how often inventory is checked, how discrepancies are investigated, how handovers are confirmed, and how item-level events reach ERP or POS. A credible business case therefore connects each benefit to a measured workflow and assigns an owner to the source data.

01

Establish the current-state denominator

Record the number of stores or counters, items per cycle, people involved, elapsed and labor hours, stocktake frequency, reconciliation time, discrepancy volume, rechecks, transfer steps, tag consumption, and system administration. Keep elapsed time and labor time separate.

Use several representative cycles when the workload varies by season or store format. Document what is excluded so the result does not become a marketing estimate that operations cannot reproduce.

02

Measure the pilot with the same definitions

Repeat the baseline measures during the RFID pilot and add read exceptions, unintended reads, operator training, equipment setup, support time, and system reconciliation. Compare equivalent item populations and operating periods.

Benefits may include labor released, more frequent controls, faster handovers, earlier discrepancy detection, improved event traceability, and reduced disposable-tag use. Only assign monetary value where finance or operations accepts the formula.

03

Model total cost and decision thresholds

Include tags, printers and encoding, readers, handhelds, fixtures, network, middleware, application changes, interfaces, installation, training, spares, support, maintenance, and replacement. Separate one-time investment from recurring cost.

Present a base case, conservative case, and scale case. Define the rollout gate in advance—for example, maximum cycle time, minimum reconciliation accuracy, acceptable exception workload, and a payback threshold approved by management.

Using NWGold as a reference without copying its economics

REAOX's published NWGold reference reports that a chain-wide monthly stocktake moved from multiple staff over a full workday to within one hour, described as approximately 30 times faster. This is strong evidence that the workflow can change, but it is not a universal ROI multiplier.

Use the reference to identify measurable categories, then calculate the target retailer's own baseline, wages, frequency, systems, consumables, and rollout costs. HIERSUN I Do's published 99.5% headquarters accuracy and approximately 60% reusable-tag consumable reduction likewise require local validation before being included in another customer's financial model.

ROI worksheet inputs

  • Baseline elapsed time, labor hours, item count, frequency, and rework
  • Pilot elapsed time, labor hours, read exceptions, reconciliation, and training
  • One-time hardware, software, integration, installation, and rollout cost
  • Recurring tags, licensing, support, maintenance, network, and replacement
  • Approved monetary value for released labor, avoided consumables, and operational improvements
  • Conservative, base, and scale scenarios with named data owners

ROI questions

Can we use the 30× NWGold result in our forecast?

Use it as a reference scenario, not as your assumed result. Your forecast should use your own baseline and a representative pilot.

Should inventory accuracy be converted directly into recovered revenue?

Only if finance accepts a documented link between the accuracy change and a financial outcome. Otherwise report it as an operational KPI.

What is the safest first ROI scope?

Choose one high-frequency, measurable workflow with reliable baseline data, such as a store stocktake or headquarters handover, before modeling a full-chain transformation.

Turn the business case into a measurable pilot

Share the current workflow, item volume, labor, frequency, systems, and cost boundaries. REAOX can help define a pilot whose results can be used in an auditable ROI model.
